I have seen so many great collaborations in my life. I have heard so many great musicians come together and create pure auditory magic. It is no secret that I love Tech N9ne, he is one of the greatest artists of my generation that is still underrated and slept on by so many. But people are catching up. Slowly but surely I see new fans emerging all the time. Including friends that would disregard him when I'd show or mention him. It's ok, you weren't ready. Lol. I've seen Tech build with so many of my favorites. From Twiztid ("Bury 'Em All" is classic), to Kottonmouth Kings ("City 2 City" is a DOPE party anthem), to Killa C ("Die Again" with Liquid Assassin is fire), to a slew of others. The collaborations I was always waiting for seemed far fetched. It was involving crossing music genres, something you don't see often, Those gems I was waiting for were (hed) p.e., Deftones, and Slipknot.
The first one to see fruition were collabs with (hed) p.e. Jahred killed it on "I Am Everything" and Tech brought his classic Scorpio flavor on "Wind Me Up". Deftones were next when Chino and Stephen brought a whole new side to Tech's style with "If I Could". And now, we have "Wither" alongside none other than Corey fucking Taylor. The cipher is complete. Hat trick, Tech. Game--Blouses. I can't begin to express how excited this makes me. And how empowering. Tech has evolved into one hell of a musician over the years and he keeps growing. He isn't afraid of growth or to push the envelope of what limits we have placed on him. There are some artists I don't care for him working with, but I respect him one hundred percent for doing things his way and going after what he wants, regardless of praise or criticism.
Slipknot, like Deftones, have proven to be one of the few bands that can continue to succeed, growing and changing while still remaining capable of producing some amazing music. A lot of people wrote Slipknot off the past few years and they've proven them wrong with .5: The Gray Chapter. To hear this new release with Tech N9ne is another testament of growth within musicians. Yet another reason why I respect musicians like Corey. For pushing their limits and boundaries, ultimately shattering preconceived notions of who you may think they are.
In my adolescence, I saw many of my favorite musicians in metal collaborate from Korn & Chino rapping Ice Cube's "Wicked", Deftones & Maynard on the iconic "Passenger", to Soulfly & Corey Taylor on the emphatic "Jump Da Fuck Up"--one of my favorite Taylor performances of all time. It was always a favorite of mine to see these bands cross between each other and something that seemed to happen a lot. In my years after, I saw collaborations happen in rap and hip hop almost daily as the metal collabs seemed to diminsh. Now, I get to see both worlds come together more and more often and you gotta admit--Tech is really the only one doing it like this at such a high level.
Let this track be an anthem and reminder that the only limits we have are those we place on ourselves. What others say and think, although helpful at times, should not be a determining factor of how we express ourselves. Self expression is self explanatory. Whatever you do in life..whoever you decide to work with...at the end of the day...
Make it your own.
Stay Creative,
BLUE731.
